The FreeDOS Project
Omni-Solutions Tech would like to spotlight this Sourceforge project. It’s called The FreeDOS Project and it is great for all you old school computer buffs. It allows you to download for free and install on a Windows 10 system and it creates a DOS environment from which you can run old DOS programs. Many people use it for older games but some businesses also need it for some old old software that they can no longer find the bare metal hardware that allows a native DOS environment.
As you may know, the oldest system that offers a true DOS native environment was Windows 95. So one can imagine that finding the hardware to run such an old OS without using virtualization much less finding the installation disks just to run a native DOS environment can be a bit hard. The FreeDOS Project can offer this as a virtualization of just the DOS system.
Here is the Project description from the developers of the project itself:
FreeDOS is a complete, free, DOS-compatible operating system that you can use to play classic DOS games, run legacy business software, or develop embedded systems. Any program that works on MS-DOS should also run on FreeDOS.
It doesn’t cost anything to download and use FreeDOS. You can also share FreeDOS for others to enjoy! And you can view and edit our source code, because all FreeDOS programs are distributed under the GNU General Public License or a similar open source software license.
We feel like this project can be useful to business and the gaming community and if anyone needs help bringing this little nugget to their production environment, don’t hesitate to give us a call at:
